WasteServ shortlisted five established consortia to proceed to the second stage of the selection process to design, build and operate the ECOHIVE Waste to Energy Plant. 

The five consortia obtained the highest scores among 11 bidders who submitted a preliminary qualification questionnaire (PQQ), the first stage of this competitive process. WasteServ announced the shortlisting on Monday, confirming that the first stage was concluded successfully with no appeals from unsuccessful bidders.

The procurement process will now swiftly move to the next competitive stage, the Invitation to Participate to Dialogue (ITPD), as WasteServ works to conclude this process with the adjudication of the contract in line with preestablished criteria.

WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca expressed his satisfaction as the company managed to attract some of the leading names in the industry, a result that shows the validity of the project and confirms that WasteServ is held in high esteem by the international industry.

The project preparations are proceeding according to schedule with the excavation of the site already reaching a critical stage.

The Waste-to-Energy facility will be treating non-recyclable waste which will be diverted away from landfill and converted into green energy. This will be a game changer in Malta’s waste management potential and will complement the rest of the green waste management plants that will form part of the ECOHIVE complex.

This investment is part of the ECOHIVE €500 million strategy which is intended to allow Malta to move away from its historical reliance on landfilling to a circular economy context with all waste streams being turned into resources.
